"We have chosen to fill our hives with
honey and wax; thus furnishing mankind
with the two noblest of things,
which are sweetness and light."
- Jonathan Swift (1667-1745)
We are Chris and Lisa Layman, Beekeepers for the past ten seasons at Fox Farm Apiary. We came to beekeeping and to each other through a shared drive to protect and support these most essential pollinators.
Currently we maintain several apiaries, with one on our farm in Greene County, near the Alcove Reservoir from which the city of Albany draws its water, and several on properties throughout the Hudson Valley. We also maintain an apiary in partnership with the Catskill Center at Thorn Preserve at the base of Overlook Mountain in Woodstock. These 60 acres of native meadow and riparian zone are protected habitat for pollinators. All equipment, fencing and labor was donated by Fox Farm Apiary, our gift to the bees and to the community.
Chris is an independent researcher devoted to deeply understanding and supporting the life of the hive. As a Stonescape Artisan specializing in Legacy Landscaping, Chris has experience working with private clients in the Hudson Valley for the past 17 years to improve landscapes and gardens. This skill serves him well as he creates and maintains micro-apiaries for clients, building the beehive pedestals and protective walls that integrate the solar electric fencing so necessary here in Black Bear country.
Lisa is a certified aromatherapist who trained with Taoist Master Dr. Jeffrey Yuen in Aromatherapy from a Chinese Medical Perspective. She creates award-winning natural skincare, herbal remedies, soaps and candles that incorporate the honey, beeswax, pollen, propolis and botanicals produced by Fox Farm bees.
